P90X for Women
I've often had talks with women who are looking to get in shape about P90X. Most of the time I hear the same thing, "I think P90X is too extreme for me" or "I don't want to get bulky muscles from P90X". I try to explain that anyone can do P90X and you can tailor the workouts to your preferences so you're not getting bulky but instead toned. I've decided to write a post that goes a little more in-depth as to why P90X is perfect for women and why they should try it.
I'll jump right into the "weight training builds bulky muscles" myth. In order for a woman to build a "body builder" type physique, she's really going to have to overload her muscles with very heavy weights and stay in the range of 6-8 reps using these heavy weights until she achieves muscle failure. Yes, P90X will help build muscle, but at the same building muscle will help you shed fat also. And as long as you keep the weight lifting in the 12-15 repetition range, you will not bulk up, but instead tone up. So you can build muscle and at the same time maintain your feminine physique.
Back when I went to the gym, I also noticed that a lot of women were cardio junkies, and that's all they would do. But even though they did cardio all the time, they still weren't getting great results and kept hitting a constant plateau with their results. Although cardio is very important for your fitness, doing only cardiovascular exercises is not the most effective way to lose weight. In truth, doing hours of cardio straight without refueling your body can cause you to break down muscle mass and slow your metabolism. Again, doing the same repetitive motion everyday like running on the treadmill, using the Stairmaster, or stationary bike can cause your body to get used to the motion, in turn slowing your progress or even halting it. Also, who wants to do the Stairmaster for hours on end...it's just boring and can cause people to lose motivation.
With P90X, you can lose weight because of the variety P90X offers. You're doing cardio, resistance workouts, yoga, kenpo, and plyo. You'll never hit a plateau. And again, P90X will help you build muscle, which helps you burn fat even faster.
Finally, the diet fads out there for women always seem to involve starving yourself. This is dangerous on many levels; first you're not giving your muscles the fuel they need to rebuild themselves at a fast pace, slowing your results. Secondly, it can often lead to binge eating and a slower metabolism. Finally, starving yourself can lead to psychological problems, up to and including brain damage.
With P90X, you're burning so many calories that you HAVE to eat in order to refuel your body for the next workout, and you're still losing weight. Of course the key to all this is you have to eat healthy foods to refuel your body the right way. In fact, if you follow P90X's nutrition guide, you'll be eating more than you have before, but still getting great results, because you're putting the right food in your body that's refueling it but not adding fat. The fitness myth out there is that you have to work out for hours everyday and eat nothing to get the body you want. The truth is the exact opposite...you can workout for an hour 5-7 days a week and eat a ton of healthy food so your body recovers and keeps going strong, and all the while you're shedding fat and getting toned.
Finally, there's the misconception that P90X is not for women. Tell that to the thousands of women out there who have gotten great results from the program, or even the women in the P90X workouts who even many guys have trouble keeping up with initially. The great thing about P90X is it offers modification moves for every single move in every single workout. Can't do a pushup? Use your knees instead of your feet while doing a pushup. Can't do a pullup? Grab a sturdy chair to put a foot on to help you. After doing these modifications, you'll be able to do regular pushups and pullups without chairs soon enough. And that's when you start seeing the results. Not only that, but you'll feel pretty damn good about yourself for overcoming workouts that you may have initially deemed "too hard for me".
In the end you only need to go on youtube and type in P90X 90 day results to see some of the awesome results women have gotten from P90X.
